Snow and my furnace.

Here is a furnace tip for everyone!  It's brilliant by the way :)

I woke up this morning and the temperature in our house was 17 degrees celsius.  A little nippy - not cold - but nippy.  The furnace was on and blowing cool to warm air, definitely not enough to warm the house.  So down in the basement I go to read the owners manual for my American Standard furnace.  I turned everything off - waited the 5 minutes for all gas to clear the lines - turned everything on and still nothing.  Turned everything Exhaustoff again- took out the filter - cleaned the filter (which was cleaned just before winter so really wasn't dirty) - put everything back together - turned it back on and again nothing.
So this is where the brilliant part comes into play.  As I am on the phone with our furnace installer (not happy - really not happy) my wife is talking to one of our neighbours who had a similar problem the last time it snowed.  Turns out our outdoor furnace intake was installed too low and thus when it snows it get covered and the furnace doesn't produce the proper amount of heat.  Makes sense - furnace was working - just not properly.  I cleared the intake, snapped a few shots for you all to see, waited 1/2 hour and bingo bango - we are in business.  Thankfully the service guy hadn't arrived yet so we cancelled that appointment and we can now enjoy the winter wonderland from the warmth of our home.
Just to recap the brilliance - my wife talked to our neighbour.  She told me to talk to him about an hour before but being a typical guy I didn't.  I guess it's a similar response to asking for directions.
So if you have that thing in the picture above sticking out of your house and it snows - you may want to clear away the snow.  I have an awesome wife!!
