Satellite to hit earth in couple of days...

satellite

I love science, better yet, I love scientist.  This morning I was reading about the satellite that is going to hit the earth and found a couple of points rather interesting.  Apparently back in 1991, when it was launched to study the ozone layer, no one put much thought into, how do we keep this thing from hitting a house when it comes back to earth.  Ahhhh...isn't science great?!?!

I also enjoy some of the other bits of "valuable" information.  For example, the odds of getting hit by some of the debris ( and when they say "hit" they mean "killed" because it will be travelling 5 miles per second!) is 1-3200.  I gotta be honest...I'm not happy with 1-3200.  Mind you, scientist have said they know approximately where this thing is gonna land so we need not worry.  Oh - where do they say it's gonna land?  Somewhere between latitudes 57 degrees north and 57 degrees south.  What does that mean?  ANYWHERE BETWEEN EDMONTON, ALBERTA AND THE SOUTHERN TIP OF SOUTH AMERICA!!!!  So basically where every human currently lives.  The one time eskimos are getting the last laugh I guess.

But really no need to panic.  Humans only populate 5% of the earth so it will probably land harmlessly in the ocean, the actual odds of it hitting "you" out of the 7 billion people is 1-21 Trillion, and most of it will burn up in the atmosphere, except for 26 pieces of which only a few could be 300 POUNDS!!  Finally, it's most likely to land sometime between Thursday and Saturday.  In other words, they don't know where it's going to land, when it's going to land, how much is going to land or how big the pieces are.  Where are the scientist from Armageddon?  They could calculate how to land Bruce Willis onto a freaking asteroid.  I want those guys.

Anyway...good luck getting your morning paper Friday morning - remember to look up.
